WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Friday, U.S. Senator and physician Rand Paul sent letters to the chairs of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security & Governmental Affairs (HSGAC) and Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions (HELP) renewing his request that they hold a hearing or series of hearings on the public health and security risks posed by gain-of-function research. Dr. Paul previously requested hearings on this issue in June 2021.

These renewed requests follow the recent admission by the National Institute of Health (NIH) that it did in fact fund EcoHealth Alliance’s risky virus enhancing research at the Wuhan Lab of Virology, despite Dr. Fauci’s testimony to Congress stating the contrary.

“Regardless of whether the SARS-CoV2 virus came from nature or a lab, it is clear to everyone that lab-made super viruses pose great danger,” said Dr. Paul. “We need to know how much of this research is happening and what dangers we face. I am asking the relevant Senate committees to schedule hearings on this research as soon as possible.”
