Rare Op-ed: The GOP must evolve, or die

The GOP is supposed to be the party of limited government but it has not done a very good job of proving it. If Republicans can become the party of balanced budgets and fiscal responsibility, we can appeal to millions from all walks of life who genuinely fear for the burden we're placing on our children.

World Magazine: Tougher gun laws based on emotion, not logic

Downplayed in this national debate and in efforts by the Obama administration to get Congress to pass "tougher" federal gun restrictions is a conversation about human nature, including better laws that allow for involuntary commitment or mandatory treatment of the mentally ill, and tougher sentencing for criminals. But if laws alone were effective in regulating criminal behavior, prisons would be empty.

Immigration Reform Starts With a Secure Border- Washington Times

Congress is getting very close to debating comprehensive immigration reform. I am firmly committed to being part of reforming our nation's immigration laws. Both conservatives and liberals agree that our complex immigration system is broken and in need of repair. Although the two sides disagree as to solutions, I have three important ideas that should be part of the debate and that should please most Americans.

The government wants your gun rights- CNN

Congress is currently debating legislation that will limit American's right to keep and bear arms and infringe on the right to privacy. The Bill of Rights was made part of our Constitution to explicitly protect freedoms including the freedom of speech, protection against warrantless searches, right to trial by jury and right to protect oneself with a firearm. I am compelled to stand up for every amendment and right enumerated in the Constitution.

I, like anyone else, whether a member of Congress or a parent, am concerned with the well-being of our children. We all want to keep our families and our communities safe. We want to see violent predators and criminals put behind bars and punished for the harm they do to others and to society.

Senate Votes on Sen. Paul’s Amendment to Fix Nation’s Infrastructure Problem

This morning, the U.S. Senate voted on a series of amendments to S.Con.Res.8, the Budget Resolution. Among these amendments was one introduced by Sen. Rand Paul, which would provide $16 billion in funding towards infrastructure projects for structurally deficient interstate bridges, through offsets in foreign assistance and the Department of Energy's Loan Guarantee Budget.

PAUL: Trust but verify to reform immigration

A few weeks ago in this column, I expressed my support and outlined some of my ideas in the immigration reform area. I am committed to the idea that we should be doing something. I titled that essay "Trust but Verify," alluding to the old Reagan doctrine that if you are going to make a deal, you have to make sure both ends of the bargain are upheld.

Sen. Rand Paul: Trust but verify on immigration reform

I am in favor of immigration reform. I am also wary of reforms granted now for a promise of border security later. In 1986, Ronald Reagan signed a deal that made just such a promise, yet we are still waiting for the border security that never came. Conservatives are also still waiting for the promised three dollars in spending cuts for every dollar in tax hikes. Fool me once ... So, it is understandable conservatives should insist that any immigration reform incorporate the principle of trust but verify.

A recent national poll concluded that 43 percent of Americans believe unemployment and job creation is the most important issue facing our country. So it's no surprise that Republicans and Democrats in Washington claim to be big supporters of creating jobs.
