Kentucky, Connecticut Senators Offer Friendly Wager on NCAA Championship Game
Sens. Rand Paul and Mitch McConnell (Ky.) today announced a friendly wager with Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy of Connecticut on the outcome of tonight's NCAA basketball Championship game, the University of Kentucky's Wildcats against the University of Connecticut's Huskies. The stakes from the wager are a selection of Kentucky Derby-Pie® from Kern's Kitchen in Louisville against Connecticut's Stew Leonard's brownies and UCONN Dairy Bar ice cream.
"Kentucky has made an unbelievable run and is one win away from its 9th National Championship. Big Blue Nation couldn't be more proud and excited. So, I look forward to enjoying desserts after Kentucky beats UConn tonight," said Sen. Paul.
"Senator Paul and I look forward to enjoying the Wisconsin brats and cheese following the Cats' win over the Badgers on Saturday. I do believe, however, that some dessert is in order. A 9th national championship for the University of Kentucky and some Connecticut ice cream and brownies will be the perfect finish to yet another thrilling NCAA tournament for the Cats," Sen. McConnell said. "Tonight, America will once again see that the Commonwealth of Kentucky is the college basketball capital of the world, as we keep the NCAA trophy in the Bluegrass State for three straight years."
Sen. Blumenthal said, "Bleeding blue and betting with pride - trusting that Kentucky's Senators won't be tasting UConn ice cream or Stew Leonard's brownies - because the Huskies will be dominant. The UConn men's team has never lost a championship game and I'm confident that Coach Ollie's squad won't disappoint tonight. In the meantime, I'll be sure to eat a light dinner so I can save room for derby pie."
"Outside of Connecticut, no one gave this team a chance. No one thought that this team-the team left out of conference realignment, the team with a second-year coach, the team ineligible for post-season play last year-could be as talented and unbelievable as they have been," said Sen. Murphy. "This team has more heart and determination than anyone else out there. This team deserves a national title and I look forward to a big portion of humble pie from my friends from Kentucky."
